  • Love thy neighbor.

Many, if not all, of us have heard this before. We probablyagree with it (the fact that youre in this book is a greatindicator!), and this message permeates throughout Trident UnitedWay.

    So what does it mean?

For Trident United Way, it means that we continuously evolve tobe a pillar supporting our communitys best efforts. It means thatwe connect resources to brilliant organizations, conveneinstitutions Business, Government, Educational, Professional, andNonprofit towards mutually beneficial ends, and address complexproblems with intricate and innovative solutions. In doing so, weaim to not only invest in promising programs and practices, but toaccelerate their impact.

The tri-county is our neighbor. We love it dearly.

THE HOWELL FAMILY GIVEIn philanthropy, as in business and homelife, its a family affair for brothers Scott and Travis Howell, partners in Ground Swell Capital. They and their wives, Valerie andShayna, are leadership donors because they grew up with an ethos ofsharing.

We were already giving to some of the organizations that TridentUnited Way works with, said Shayna. We like what Trident United Waydoes being the convener and creating networks so that eachorganization isnt reinventing the wheel.

Adds Valerie, who served on a volunteer community investmentcommittee, Now that were parents, we see things were able to offerour children and I want to make sure other children in ourcommunity have these opportunities.

The two couples and their children live in Folly Beach and valuegiving locally. We grew up here, said Scott. The fact that TridentUnited Way has a local focus means a lot to us. And we like theresults-based community approach.

HENRY WALLACE FINANCIAL STABILITYFollowing military service inBangkok, Thailand, Henry Wallace returned to the states and fellinto an unhealthy cycle of addiction. He was living on the streets, struggling with a drug and alcohol problem, and diagnosed withcancer.

He felt there was no hope, but today, he says, Im a primeexample of your donations at work. Youve got the living proofhere.

Through Trident United Way, Henry was connected to financialsupports and a program funded by Trident United Way at theLowcountry Food Bank, which taught him cooking techniques and basicskills in the kitchen. He not only learned how to cook but, alsorealized he could tackle things he had never tried before.

With his newfound confidence, Henry is now off the streets andliving healthy in a place of his own in West Ashley. He also soughtmedical treatment and is now living cancer-free.

Henry hopes to share his confidence with others by volunteeringat the VA Hospital as a patient escort and by mentoring youngerstudents in the cooking program. Giving back is important becausesomeone gave to me and took a chance on me. Now I can give back tothe community, explains Henry.

LISA GETHARD HEALTHWhen Lisa Gethards devastating pain andsickness became more than she could manage, she and her husbandScott had to quit their jobs to take care of her. I had a highpaying job and never thought something like this would happen to meLisa said. It could happen to anyone.

Lisas recovery became the couples top priority. The threat ofhomelessness was becoming more real every day because she requiredconstant care. Scott and Lisa turned to Trident United Way and itspartners East Cooper Community Outreach and the Lowcountry FoodBank for both financial assistance and support with Lisashealth.

Lisa participated in a cooking class where she learned mealplanning, budgeting and nutrition. She took yogic breathing classesthat taught her exercises to lower blood pressure, de-stress andmanage pain. She is now more independent, healthy and active, whichhas allowed Scott to return to work and restore their life onDaniel Island.

MICHELLE ARREDONDO FINANCIAL STABILITYMichelle Arredondo,Executive Director of Helping Hands of Goose Creek, struggled withthe process of applying for investments from Trident United Way.Taking the step to outcomes and measures was intimidating. I foughtit with every breath I took.

She reluctantly persisted because the $40,000 investment wasroughly 40% of her budget. It turned out to be much more than that.By developing a logic model that described how we would help ourclients move to the point where they dont need us anymore, we had atemplate for other grants, Arredondo said. We were able to use thattool to attract $32,000 in new grants.

Helping Hands now has a new van, a revamped warehouse, and a newcooler and freezer to hold fresh, nutritious produce. Each hasincreased Helping Hands capacity and efficiency in helping BerkeleyCounty residents in need move up the ladder to financial stability. The Benefit Bank of SC, a strategic partner of Trident United Way,works with Helping Hands to sign up clients for eligible benefits. And everyone who shops for food at the pantry takes a moneymanagement course taught by staff at Sun Trust Bank. We see HelpingHands as the first stop on the road to self-sufficiency, Arredondosaid.

CHERYL LOVE VOLUNTEERCheryl Love became a 2-1-1 Hotlinevolunteer by accident a wonderful accident.

A longtime supporter of United Way of Greater Cincinnati, whereher husband served as Board Chair, Cheryl went straight to theTrident United Way to seek volunteer opportunities here. She wasready to share her talents and experience as a former teacher, HRmanager, radio talk show host, Realtor, and loyal volunteer for afood bank and the arts. I went to tuw.org, clicked the button andhad an interview with staff. Little did I know it was an interviewfor 2-1-1, she laughs.

Six years later, Cheryl is a stalwart volunteer, helping peoplefind the resources they need. When her husband died, the 2-1-1people became my support network because my family wasnt here.Cheryl loves the 2-1-1 training and the ability to connect withparts of the community she wouldnt ordinarily know about. We can bevery isolated from what the needs really are. But I get to hearfrom people who really need the services.

CONWAY SAYLOR ADVOCATEConway Saylor, a clinical pediatricpsychologist, professor of psychology and director of ServiceLearning at The Citadels Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics, has been a longtime donor of Trident United Way. It wasnt untilthis past year, though, that she fully understood the deep strategyunderpinning the organizations community impact efforts.

The focus on target areas (education, financial stability andhealth) is consistent with what Ive been learning professionallyabout what works on complex issues, she said. In my role asdirector of service learning, I try to find best practices and themetrics that determine whether our efforts in civic engagement aremaking an impact. Then I discovered that Trident United Way wasalso engaged in focused efforts supported by metrics.

Dr. Saylor is helping Trident United Way and its partnersdevelop metrics assessing the impact of civic engagement. Civicengagement is more than volunteering, she said. Its about owningthe whole issue.

THE YOUNG FAMILY HEALTHDana was told that her little girl,GeNovia, had Down syndrome at one week old. With two other childrenin her family, Dana was grateful for all of the help that MUSCChildrens Care provided. Through the hospitals partnership withTrident United Way, she was referred to the Family Literacy Program(FLP) to prepare her 5 year old daughter, DNala, for school.

The FLP provides families assistance with health and educationalneeds.

They can learn what is required for school entrance so when theyget to school, theyre ready, they start on time and theyre excitedabout learning, said Dr. Henry Lemon, the pediatrician at MUSCChildrens Care. This promotes readiness at first grade, thirdgrade, high school and even graduation.

DNala and her mother have been given the tools to prepare herfor school through their sessions at the FLP. She now knows heralphabet and is beginning to read.

They make sure health and education come first, said Dana. Youalways have to put the child first. Literacy has to come first forthem to excel in school.

TUW knows that health and education are intertwined. Programslike the FLP are preparing hundreds of children like DNala for abright and successful future.

WILLIS AND CHARLISA PUGH GIVEWillis and Charlisa Pugh, and theirchildren Cara (18), William (16), and Warren (5), are the kinds ofactive community investors who give with their heads, hearts andhands, Willis says. He and Charlisa, Alabama natives and Universityof Alabama graduates, both grew up in a tradition of giving back. Our parents taught us that only one decision to the left or rightseparates all of us from being in need, he says.

For the Pughs, who confer with their kids in their Mt. Pleasanthome about their annual giving plan, contributing to theircommunity is more than check writing. That is one piece, but webelieve you have to be there physically for people too, saysCharlisa.

As Plant Manager at Cummins, Inc., Willis has been instrumentalin creating a culture of community service in the workplace aswell. The mission of Trident United Way really speaks to me becauseits outcome-based and innovative: and our family really buys intothe three pillars of education, financial stability and health.

Acting as role models with their children, in the workplace andin their community, Willis and Charlisa Pugh are leaders in boldcommunity change.

SHANTONE FINANCIAL STABILITYWhen you meet Shantone, you mightlearn that he is 36 years old, enjoys working outdoors and is inthe process of becoming who hes supposed to be in life. What youmight not realize is that his journey to get to where he is todaywas not an easy one.

Shantone had a desire to contribute to society and turn his lifearound following a stint in prison. After his release in November,he sought out self-help information and employment opportunities atthe Berkeley Prosperity Center, a partnership of Trident UnitedWay, Goodwill Industries, Inc., and Family Services, Inc.

At the beginning of his job search, he struggled to find workdue to his criminal record. Shantone met with a counselor at theProsperity Center and expressed his interest in workingoutdoors.

The counselor was able to point him in the right direction andShantone secured a job as a landscaper in Mount Pleasant just a fewdays after their meeting. I heard the joy in his voice when hecalled to say he was hired, said his counselor, Claritha Wade.Alston Wilkes Society helped him purchase work boots and pants, andGoodwill bought him a rain suit and work gloves. Shantone now has adesire to pay it forward and make a difference in the lives ofothers by being a mentor to local youth.

SHANA PINKSTON GIVEShana Pinkston has not always been a fan ofTrident United Way. For years, she felt she was being asked tocontribute without being told what Trident United Way was doingwith her donation. Just a few weeks after joining the staff atMeadWestvaco, which has a robust partnership with Trident UnitedWay, she asked to know more.

I was invited to learn about Trident United Way and I liked theanswers, Shana says. What really resonated with me is that moneyisnt just passed out to partner programs; there are actual metricsand criteria they have to meet and Trident United Way supportsthose programs along the way. Im a fan of holding peopleaccountable.

Shana became a leadership donor and attended United WaysNational Womens Leadership Council gathering in Charleston lastyear. Today, she is providing fresh leadership of her own byrecruiting co-workers to invest in their community through TridentUnited Way. Shana has long cared about her community, andvolunteering her time and money to the organizations she feelspassionate about. She appreciates having a strategic partner thatshares her focus on results.

Because of his great efforts,Kassing earned Trident United Ways 2013 Community Builder of theYear Award.

I love this community and feel blessed to live here, he said. Its the reason I feel obligated to give back.

Last year, Kassing led Trident United Ways Day of Caring, thelargest community volunteering day in the Lowcountry. He has servedas the Trident United Way campaign chair and board chair. He isalso a member of the board of trustees at Pinewood PreparatorySchool in Summerville.

CUMMINS INC. CORPORATE COMMUNITY BUILDER OF THE YEARThis yearsCorporate Community Builder of the Year is Cummins, Inc., a companywhose corporate ethos sounds a lot like Trident United Waysmission. Community service is such an integral part of thecorporate culture that employees are evaluated on how muchvolunteering they do.

In fact, Cummins has a rich association with North CharlestonElementary School, to whom they provide mentors during the schoolyear.

For Cummins, community involvement has always been in theforefront. We believe a strong community leads ultimately to astronger company, says Willis Pugh, plant manager at the CumminsTurbo Technologies division in Ladson.
