He was a child prodigy with a golden horn, a pied piper, gathering fans as he grew up in the 1940s in northern Louisiana. People said he was the next Harry James. There was only one thing wrong with this picture.
Sonny hated the trumpet. Hated the attention. Hated every solo. Hated every note. Of course, being a kid, he could not tell anybody about or chicken.
"They bussed my butt all over the country," he says now at the Ruston Huddle House. "I couldn't cat three days before a solo." So Sonny played on, in agony. Then his fame spread sufficiently that he was invited to be the feature solo trumpet performer at Louisiana Tech's commencement exercise. His parents and the whole village of Clay went nuts. Bernard was a celebrity; the next I larry James.
But for 13-year-old Sonny a grand college graduation event was mission impossible. A difficult from-mcmory piece to play. A huge academic audience at the big college up the road. So, not long before graduation, a despondent, desperate Sonny threw himself in front of a car on U.S. 167 South near Clay.
The resulting injuries were not fatal Sonny was not suicidal, though he'd risk death to avoid the graduation performance but they were plenty sufficient to keep him at home in Clay. His upper teeth were knocked through his lower lip. The perfect lick to disable a trumpet player. Sonny consoled the poor frantic woman who knocked him in a ditch. He couldn't tell her, but she was his angel.
He was so happy. Sonny finally refused solos and later was the trumpet star of the Debonaires, a popular band in northern Louisiana during the 1940s. But he finally put up the trumpet altogether. He hated that horn. A lot of people in northern Louisiana still say Bernard could have been another Harry James he was that good.
But Bernard, at 72, can now, with a grin, dismiss it all in the Ruston Huddle House.
