He was 74. Buscema drew Conan, adapted from stories by Robert Howard, for more than 25 years. Buscema's other works included the Silver Surfer, a being from outer space stuck on Earth.
Although Buscema drew many of Marvel's heroes, he preferred noncostumed characters. He began his career in 1948, answering an ad for The New York Times. He later worked for Stan Lee and other comic strip creators. Buscema's books include "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" and "The John Buscema Sketchbook." KENNETH JOHN RYAN Doctor, medical ethicist WESTON, Mass. Dr.
Kenneth John Ryan, a prominent obstetrician and gynecologist who studied how the body naturally produces steroids, died Jan. 5. He was 75. Ryan also was a prominent medical ethicist, an emeritus professor at Harvard Medical School, and chairman of the obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology department at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He served in World War II and graduated from Harvard Medical School.
He taught at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, the University of California at San Diego and Harvard. His research focused on steroidogenesis, which plays a role in treating breast and prostate cancer, and on fertility treatments. In the late 1950s, he discovered how the placenta synthesizes estrogen. In the 1970s, Ryan was chairman of the national commission that produced the Belmont Report, which offered guidelines for research on human subjects. JAMES USRY First black Atlantic City mayor ATLANTIC CITY, James Usry, the first black mayor of Atlantic City, died Friday.
He was 79 and had suffered from diabetes and cancer. A longtime educator, principal and school official, Usry was elected mayor in 1984 and served until 1990, when he was defeated by James Whelan. Usry's career was marred by his 1989 arrest in a corruption probe. He pleaded guilty to a campaign finance law violation and was spared a jail term. A native of Athens, he moved to Atlantic City with his family as a toddler.
RALPH J. VOSS Longtime bank executive Ralph J. Voss, former president, chief executive and board chairman of Western Bancorporation, the holding company for United California Bank and forerunner of First Interstate Bancorp, has died. He was 91. Voss died Jan.
20 in his sleep at an assisted living center in Portland, Ore. In his more than four decades in the industry, Voss saw major changes in banking that presaged multiple mergers, and after his retirement in 1978 watched many of the bank names he had served disappear. Born on Aug. 11, 1910, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, Voss earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and began his career with Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Co. in Chicago in 1934.
Widowed in 1998 by the death of his wife of 52 years, Eleanore, Voss is survived by a son, Donald, of La Canada-Flintridge, a daughter, Janet, of Lake Oswego, and two grandsons. Sgt. Covin died January 26, 2002 at his home after a long illness. Born in Richland County, he was a son of the late James Louis and Edith Roberts Covin. Sgt. Covin was a career soldier serving 25 years in the United States Army.
He fought inWorld War II and Vietnam as an Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Crewman. During his military career, Sgt. Covin was awarded the Purple Heart among other medals and commendations. After retiring from the U.S. Army, Sgt.
Covin went on to retire from the City of Columbia as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Blythewood Seventh Day Adventist Church. Surviving are his wife, Assunta Serna Covin; sons, Louis M. Covin of Gaston; David D. Covin Jr.
and Johnny L. Covin, both of Winnsboro; daughters, Maria R. Ball of Winnsboro, Assunta M. Bacon of Pelion and Pierina Allinder of San Diego; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Sgt.

Col. William Guerry Goode, USA 97, will be held at a later date in St. Augustine, Fla, when his remains are returned to the family. Mr. Goode died peacefully at home on Friday, January 25, 2002.
He had donated his body to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Born in St. Augustine, Fla, July 18, 1904, he was the eldest child of Obe Pierce and Carlota Sanchez Goode. He graduated from the University of Florida and then worked at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. At the onset of World War II, he was selected to join the American Red Cross Harvard Field Unit and served with the unit in Salisbury, England.
When America entered the war, he joined the United States Army and served in England and later in France and Germany. After the war, he worked again at Temple University Hospital for some years. Then, he and his family moved back to St. Augustine and he worked at Flagler Hospital and for the City of St. Augustine until his retirement.
Later, he and his wife moved to Columbia. Surviving are his wife, Ann Wadsworth Goode; daughter, Karen Goode Taylor of Columbia; sons, Sanchez Goode of St. Augustine and Guerry Goode of Durham, N.C.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predceceased by his sisters, Kathryn Goode Cowherd and Winna Goode Carnes; brothers, Obe Byng Goode and Rodman Goode. Mr. Hamrick, widower of Mildred Marang Hamrick, died Monday, January 28, 2002. Born in Goldsboro, he was a son of the late Otto Vetus and Carolyn Mayes Hamrick. He grew up in Shelby, N.C., graduated from Shelby High School, and in 1950 graduated from Wake Forest University, just as his father had done before him in 1910. He served as a tail gunner on a "Liberator" bomber during World War II.
He had many great achievements during his 35 years with Purina Company and provided leadership in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina, and South Carolina prior to his retirement in 1985 as District Manager. Lovingly known as "Big he was a devoted family man who knew and loved the Lord and regularly attended West Hartsville Baptist Church. He enjoyed sports, especially Wake Forest Demon Deacon sports, gardening, boating, hunting, fishing, and animals, and in his earlier days he was an avid horseman. It could be said of Shep that he never met a stranger and he had a knack for making people feel his warmth with his bright smile, booming voice, and big, gentle hands. He was endearingly called "DooDaddy" by his grandchildren and taught each one to say "I'm my DooDaddy's buddy!" We will all miss our big buddy.

Mrs. Jordan died Sunday, January 27, 2002, at Mercy Hospital South in Pineville, N.C. Mrs. Jordan was born on February 24, 1931, in Salisbury, N.C., a daughter of the late Ferdinand Robert Bowman Price and Margaret Witherspoon Price. She was a graduate of St.
Mary's College in Raleigh, N.C., a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and had been a member of the Mannequins of Charlotte. She lived at River Hill Plantation from 1971- 1999, when she moved to The Cypress at Charlotte. Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was active in the Alter Guild, and enjoy playing bridge, gardening and cooking. Surviving are her children, Julie Jordan Miller, and her husband, Bud Miller, of York, Virginia Jordan Mithchell, and her husband, J.P.
Mitchell, of Summerfield, N.C., Jord Hampton Jordan III, of York, Robert Bowman Price Jordan, and his wife, Amy Jordan, of Johns Island, Mary Margaret Jordan, and her husband, Bill Hartin, of Columbia; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and aunt, Dorothy Price Wakefield, of Charlotte.
