Virginia Curtis Bush

Virginia Curtis Bush passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 21 at 95 years old. She is survived by her two sons, Joseph Bush Jr. (Elizabeth) and Jeffrey Bush (Joanne); granddaughter, Gillian Bush; nephews, Mark Helms (Cyndi) and Matthew Helms (Tracie); and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Joseph E. Bush; sister, Joyce Curtis Helms Peterman; and parents, William Ray Curtis and Pauline Crittenden Curtis.

She was born in Glenwood, Alabama in 1929 and spent her childhood there. She recalled growing up in Glenwood fondly, describing it as a self-sufficient village where everyone looked out for each other. She liked to reminisce about her family and friends in Glenwood and frequently said, “It was the best place in the world to grow up.” She maintained her cherished friends from Glenwood and Luverne all her life.

Virginia graduated from Troy State Teachers College (now Troy University) in 1950. She was a lifetime member of Troy University Alumni Association and was Founder of its New York Chapter. She chaired for decades the World War II Reunion Committee of Troy University.

Virginia was a High School English teacher in Georgia and New Jersey. In Summit, NJ she served as President of the PTA, and was a member and officer of the Junior League of Summit. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.

Virginia enjoyed antiques and became an avid collector, beautifully displaying them in her homes in Summit, New Jersey and Troy, Alabama. Virginia loved to entertain and to spend time with friends and family. Being with the people she loved brought her great joy. She will be dearly missed by all.

A memorial service will be held at Green Hills Funeral Home, Troy Alabama, on Tuesday September 3, 2024, at 2:00 pm with visitation beginning at 1:00pm. A reception with refreshment will follow the service.

William Lewis

Fannin, Sr.

William Lewis Fannin, Sr., age 96, a resident of Troy, died Saturday, August 24, 2024 at his residence. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at 11 am from the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Troy with the Rev. Perry Green officiating. Interment will follow in Green Hills Memorial Park with Dillard Funeral Home of Troy directing. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 from 9:30 am until 11 am at the funeral home.

W.L. was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Mr. Fannin was a hard working man who earned everything he got in life. Whether is was the nearly 40 years he spent as an engineer on the railroad, building his own homes, or working with cattle -he made sure that everything he did was done right and he was excellent at it. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Fannin you quickly made a friend for life. His people skills and his ability to befriend anyone was very apparent. In his spare time, he loved to quail hunt and spend time with his family. Mr. Fannin made a profound impact on those in his life. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.

He is survived by wife of 76 years: Nell G. Fannin; son: William Lewis Fannin Jr. (Michele); daughter: Carol F. Kilpatrick; grandchildren: Jacob Fannin (Macale), Ashley Simmons, Aaron Simmons; great-grandaughter: Allie Brook Fannin; sister, Julia Nell Chandler; brother: Oren Fannin; sister-in-law: Janice Grant Ganter; Special care giver and friend, Annie Lois Bean; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family.

He is preceded in death by his daughter: Barbara Kim Fannin; parents: Lewis R and Erin D. Fannin; step-mother: Opal L. Fannin; sisters: Alice F. Green (Manly), Mary F. Whittaker (Walter); brother: Rivers Fannin (Hilda); sister: Frances Manning (Emmett); sister-in-law: Janice Grant Ganter; and brother-in-law: Billy Chandler.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jacob Fannin, Aaron Simmons, Robert Manning, Herbie Haisten, Cliff Carroll, and John Nunnelee. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be David Gibson, Patrick Lucas, Ray Horn, JC Mills, Mike Harris, Jamie Hill, Jay Hill, Gene White, Tom Pate, Bubba Conrad, Charles Nunnelee, and Cooper Hill.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Enhabit Hospice for their thoughtful care of Mr. Fannin in his final days.
