Brendan Michael Jefferies - April 09, 1971 - March 18, 2022

Departed: 03/18/2022 (Commerce)

Obituary Preview: Brendan Michael Jefferies, of Commerce, passed away suddenly, but peacefully, at home, Friday, March 18, 2022. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Commerce Funeral Home. A private funeral service is planned for Thursday, March 24, 2022.

Born in Dallas, Texas April 9, 1971, Brendan spent his early childhood in Grand Prairie, until his parents separated in 1975, when he was four. He, his brother, and his mother then moved to Tyler, Texas where he attended St. Gregory Cathedral School. His family then moved to Quinlan, Texas in 1978 where he graduated Valedictorian of Quinlan Ford High School in 1989. He completed his collegiate studies at Texas A&M University-Commerce in 1995.

Brendan nurtured a lifelong thirst for knowledge and was happy to share! A confirmed Catholic with a good, loving mother, Brendan possessed a strong moral compass that turned a childhood love of superheroes and fantasy into a lifelong passion for stories of Good vs Evil: Batman vs The Joker, Luke Skywalker vs Darth Vader, Clerics vs Devils. Brendan enjoyed imaginative themes of strength and character. Ultimately, he envisioned himself not unlike a Hobbit…seeking a simple life in “The Shire” (aka Commerce), filled with a loving family, the best of friends, good times and delicious food. Brendan considered himself an expert at the grill and Margarita Master. All agreed! He loved America, had a passion for politics and was a lifelong fan of “America’s Team”, the Dallas Cowboys. Brendan’s devotion to the things he loved would often lead to loud, lengthy and intense debates with his brother. He was generous to strangers and believed in the lessons of love taught by Jesus Christ. Although he struggled at times with his health, he always managed to bring his family and friends abundant joy, smiles, and full-body laughter.

Brendan’s generous heart along with a winning smile and infectious laugh created strong, loving bonds throughout his life. Brendan formed lifelong friendships as a BRAT, comforted travelers as a beloved innkeeper, and is remembered for his magical work as store manager at Mary of Puddin’ Hill. Brendan’s journey led him to the love of his life, his soulmate, Kim Flanagan. They married on June 10, 2006 in Commerce, Texas, where they established their home. Their family was complete with the arrival of their amazing son, Sebastian, on July 14, 2014. Brendan then fully devoted his life to being a full-time father for his one and only son.

Brendan is survived by his wife Kim, and son, Sebastian, of Commerce; mother Kathleen Capehart of Commerce; brother Kevin Jefferies and wife, Kayla, of Greenville; beloved cousins Diane Mezayek and husband, Sam, of Tyler; Austin Young and wife Dana, of Rusk, Laura Wilson and husband, Robert, of Tyler; and Allison Moore and husband, Mark, of Tyler; and many friends as close as any family.

Brendan was preceded in death by stepfather, Robbin Capehart; beloved Aunt “Cookie” Young; and dear friend Richard Fulkerson.

To honor Brendan’s caring and generous spirit, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Doug Flutie Foundation for Autism - www.flutiefoundation.org.

Departed: 02/23/2022 (Commerce)

Obituary Preview: Larry Michael Binion, 75, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 23, 2022. He was surrounded by his wife of 47 years, Nancy, their three children, and other close family members as he completed his earthly journey.

Larry was born April 16, 1946, in Sayre, Oklahoma, but spent his youth, adolescence, and early adulthood in Wewoka, Oklahoma. He moved to Dallas, TX in 1973 to attend preacher school, which led him to meet the love of his life, Nancy. They eloped February 3, 1975 and would be by each other’s side for nearly half a century. Together, they had three children, Annie, Toby, and Nicholas, ten grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.

Larry was a man of diverse talents and abilities. He was first and foremost a devoted Christian. A man whose faith could move mountains, his dedication inspired and encouraged many. He was also a high school special ed teacher, beloved by his students. After he retired, he spent several years as a substitute. He loved his students very much, and they loved him. They affectionately dubbed him “the elbow man.” Larry also served in the Army National Guard, amassing twenty years of service. Larry was one of a kind; a man who will be loved and sorely missed by everyone who was privileged enough to know him. His personality was larger than life. He always had a smile on his face. He was always glad to see you and had a hug and a joke for everyone he met. His sense of humor kept everyone grinning. The light in his eyes alone could brighten a dark room. He always put God first in his life, himself last, and everyone else in between. He was the humblest man you’ve ever met. He was a good and faithful servant all of his life. Well done!

After finding out that Blue Birds were Ag Exempt, he took an interested in drawing them into his back yard through building the perfect box for them; successful to have several families occupy their new homes and enjoyed watching them. Lela Highfill Brock - July 14, 1930 - January 22, 2022

Departed: 01/22/2022 (Commerce)

Obituary Preview: Lela Highfill Brock, 91, passed away on January 22, 2022 in Grapevine, TX. She was born July 14, 1930 near Freedom, OK, to Elmer and Elizabeth Highfill, and grew up on her beloved family farm in Mooreland, OK.

Lela earned her BSN from Oklahoma Baptist University, graduating in the school’s first nursing class in 1956. She married the love of her life, Archie D. Brock on August 31, 1957. After living in Oklahoma and Virginia, they settled the family in Commerce, TX in 1968. She was a longtime member of, and Sunday School teacher at, First Baptist Church in Commerce.

Lela worked as an RN in both the educational and clinical settings until her retirement in 1995, at which time she was the OB Unit Coordinator at Citizens General Hospital (now Hunt Regional Medical Center). She was also a pioneer in Lamaze childbirth education in Hunt and Hopkins counties. Initially the OB doctors were skeptical. When the doctors noticed that the moms and dads that went to her class were calmer and more prepared for their birth experience, she earned their trust. The doctors started referring patients to her class and even became her students as well.

She had a passion for giving of herself to several causes including her alma mater (OBU), the Psychology Club, the Bargain Box, the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum, and the Prayer Shawl Ministry at FBC which was named in her honor.

Lela loved her family with all her heart. Her devotion was to her three daughters, and four grandchildren. She had a special bond with her sisters, and they could tell stories without end of their time growing up on the farm, with each story more hilarious than the one before. There were also many fun-filled group vacations with the sisters and their families, which led to even more stories to tell. These times were some of her favorite memories.

She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Claxton (Clif) of Llano, Janet Wasson (Bryan) of Grapevine, and Janie Akers of Allen; grandchildren Joshua Wasson of Euless, Jeremiah Wasson of Grapevine, and Hannah Akers of Carrollton; sister Vera McNaught of Claremont, CA; sister-in-law, Ellen Brock Kilcrease (Jake) of Gordonville; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Archie Brock, grandson Caleb Akers, and her sisters, Jane Laird, Mary McDaniel, and Marie Chapel.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Commerce (www.firstcommerce.org/giving) or the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org/donate).
